Quadratic field reflectron

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013456

An ion mirror for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer whose potential grows as the square of the penetration depth, so the retarding field increases in direct proportion to depth. For an ideal mirror of this kind the flight time is independent of ion kinetic energy to every order. A single-stage linear-field reflectron, by contrast, focuses only to first order and so compensates a narrower spread of energies.
