Reflectron
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010096
An ion mirror used in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to increase mass resolution by correcting for the initial kinetic energy distribution of ions. It consists of a series of electrodes that create a retarding electrostatic field, causing ions with higher kinetic energy to penetrate deeper into the field before being reflected. This process extends the flight path for faster ions, so that ions of the same mass-to-charge ratio arrive at the detector at nearly the same time.
