Recessive
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010012
Describing an allele whose phenotypic effect is expressed only in the homozygous state, when two identical copies are present for a particular gene. The trait associated with a recessive allele is masked by the presence of a dominant allele in a heterozygous individual. For a recessive trait or disorder, such as cystic fibrosis, to be observed, an individual must inherit one copy of the recessive allele from each parent, making them homozygous recessive for that gene.
