Heterozygote advantage
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005276
A phenomenon in genetics where individuals who are heterozygous for a particular gene have a higher fitness or survival rate than individuals who are homozygous for either allele. This selective advantage maintains both alleles in the population, even if one allele is deleterious in the homozygous state. A classic example is the increased resistance to malaria in individuals heterozygous for the sickle cell trait.
