Genetic hitchhiking
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004835
The phenomenon where an allele at one locus increases in frequency not because it is under direct positive selection, but because it is physically linked to a nearby allele that is undergoing positive selection. This co-selection occurs when the beneficial allele sweeps through a population, carrying along neutral or even slightly deleterious alleles on the same chromosome. The extent of hitchhiking depends on the recombination rate between the selected and linked loci.
