Natural selection
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013326
The process whereby organisms with heritable traits that are better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring than those with less adapted traits. Over generations, this differential survival and reproduction leads to an increase in the frequency of the favorable traits within a population. This mechanism is a primary driver of evolution, distinct from genetic drift, which involves random changes in allele frequencies.
