Reference material

A substance or object with one or more properties that are sufficiently homogeneous and well-established to be used for calibrating an apparatus, assessing a measurement method, or assigning values to materials. This material is used to verify the accuracy and precision of analytical measurements. Certified reference materials have properties validated by an internationally recognized procedure.
