Reference method

An analytical procedure of established and demonstrated accuracy for a specific measurement purpose. It is thoroughly investigated and its results are considered to be sufficiently close to the true value for the intended application. A reference method is used to assess the accuracy of other methods and is distinct from a definitive method, which has the highest accuracy and is based on first principles.
