Reversible-addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013503

A type of reversible-deactivation radical polymerization in which control over the molecular weight and dispersity is achieved through a degenerative chain-transfer process. Propagating radicals react with a chain-transfer agent, known as a RAFT agent, via an addition-fragmentation mechanism, creating a dormant species and a new radical. The process relies on thiocarbonylthio compounds, such as dithioesters or trithiocarbonates, as the chain-transfer agents.
