Standard mortality ratio
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011299
The number of deaths actually observed in a study population divided by the number expected if that population had experienced the age-specific death rates of a chosen standard population. A result of 1, or 100 when quoted as a percentage, means mortality equal to the standard, and higher values mean excess mortality. Occupational and cohort studies use it, with the expected count obtained by applying standard rates to the person-years at risk.
