Sterility

The complete inability of an individual to reproduce, because functional gametes are not produced or conception cannot occur, as opposed to subfertility, where conception is possible but impaired. Causes include congenital abnormalities, surgical removal of reproductive organs, and damage from disease, drugs, or radiation, and some causes are reversible. In microbiology and pharmacy, the word also means the absence of viable microorganisms from a product or object.
