Compatibility layer

A software component that allows an operating system or program to run software designed for a different system. It translates system calls and application programming interfaces (APIs) from one environment to another, enabling applications to function without modification. Wine, for example, provides a compatibility layer for running Windows applications on Unix-like operating systems.
