A request-response protocol in the client-server model that structures how data is transferred over the internet, forming the basis of the World Wide Web. Clients, such as web browsers, send Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) requests for resources like HTML pages or images, and servers reply with the requested data and a status code indicating the outcome of the request. The secure version, HTTPS, uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) for encryption and is specified in RFC 2818.
