Secure Sockets Layer, a deprecated cryptographic protocol that provided secure communication over a computer network. It established an encrypted link between a web server and a browser, protecting data integrity and confidentiality. Transport Layer Security (TLS) has superseded SSL as the standard for secure internet communication.
