Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-000618
An intrusion prevention system (IPS) actively monitors network traffic for malicious activity and automatically takes action to block or prevent detected threats. Unlike an intrusion detection system (IDS), which only alerts, an IPS can drop malicious packets, reset connections, or block source IP addresses. It operates in-line with network traffic to enforce security policies.
