TRIM

Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001556

An Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) command that allows an operating system to inform a solid-state drive (SSD) which data blocks are no longer in use and can be internally erased. This command prevents performance degradation over time by enabling the SSD's garbage collection process to work more efficiently. Without TRIM, an SSD must read, erase, and rewrite entire blocks of data, even if only a small portion is valid.
