TTL
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001255
A mechanism that limits the lifespan or number of hops that a data packet or piece of data can exist in a network before being discarded. For IP packets, it is a field in the IP header that is decremented by each router it passes through. When the TTL reaches zero, the packet is dropped to prevent it from circulating indefinitely and consuming network resources.
