Extensible Markup Language

1. A markup language for documents containing structured information. The XML specification defines a standard way to add markup language to documents. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of structured data across different information systems, particularly via the Internet.
2. A set of rules for encoding documents in machine-readable form.
3. A flexible language for creating common information formats and sharing both the format and content of data over the Internet and elsewhere. XML is a formatting language recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). For guidance on the development of XML schema for the Exchange Network or related activities of the Network Technical Group, see the Exchange Network website at http://www.exchangenetwork.net.
