Air cell
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000127
A small cylindrical chamber in a diesel engine's cylinder head, open to the cylinder through a hole at one end and mounted to keep thermal contact with the head low. At top dead centre most of the air charge sits in the chamber and the cavity beside it, fuel is injected across the cavity into the cell, and the burning jet then shoots back out into the cylinder. A pintle injector with a narrow spray feeds it.
