Albany slip

A natural clay found near Albany, New York, historically used as a glaze for stoneware. When fired to high temperatures, this iron-rich clay melts to form a dark brown or black, glossy surface. It was widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for utilitarian pottery such as crocks and jugs.
