Underslip

A layer of liquid clay, or slip, applied to a ceramic piece before the main glaze application. It serves as a decorative layer, providing color, texture, or a base for sgraffito or other surface treatments. Underslips are formulated to adhere well to the greenware or bisque-fired clay and to be compatible with the overlying glaze.
