Apex

The highest point of a vein or lode as it is found at or nearest to the surface of the ground. Under the General Mining Law of 1872 in the United States, the owner of a mining claim containing the apex has the right to follow and mine the vein downwards, even if it extends under adjacent property. This legal principle is known as the extralateral right or apex rule.
