Beamwork
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000484
The system of heavy timber or steel beams used to support the main pumping and hoisting machinery in a mine shaft, particularly the large Cornish engines. This structural framework transferred the reciprocating motion of the engine's great beam to the pump rods or hoisting ropes extending down the shaft. The integrity of the beamwork was fundamental to the dewatering and operation of deep, water-logged mines throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
