Summit
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005761
The highest point of elevation on a railway line or a particular section of track between two valleys. Reaching a summit requires trains to overcome a sustained gradient, which dictates the maximum tonnage a locomotive can haul over that route. Lines with high summits, such as those crossing mountain ranges, often require the use of more powerful locomotives, helper engines, or specialized braking systems for the descent.
