Arch
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006759
A sustained electrical discharge that creates a plasma channel between two electrodes, producing intense light and heat. An arc forms when a gas, such as air, becomes ionized, allowing current to flow across a gap that would otherwise be an insulator. This phenomenon is applied in electric arc welding, arc furnaces for melting metals, and arc lamps for high-intensity lighting, with temperatures reaching several thousand degrees Celsius.
