Boss

A raised, circular, or cylindrical projection on a casting or forged part, designed to provide additional material for machining, mounting, or reinforcement. Bosses often serve as locations for drilling and tapping holes for fasteners, or as bearing surfaces. They are common features in mechanical components where localized strength or attachment points are required.
