Butment cheek

The vertical surface of a mortise or tenon joint that bears against the corresponding part, providing resistance to compression. This face is cut precisely to achieve a tight fit and transfer load effectively between the joined members. In a mortise and tenon joint, there are two butment cheeks on the tenon.
