A sheet or panel, made of material like aluminum, plywood, or particleboard, used to separate and protect wood veneers during pressing. Placed between the press platen and the workpiece, it distributes pressure evenly, prevents the glue from sticking to the press, and protects the veneer surface from damage. Cauls are also used to apply clamping pressure to curved or irregularly shaped assemblies during glue-ups.
