Compass swing

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001271

The process of calibrating a ship's magnetic compass to correct for deviation, which is the error caused by the vessel's own magnetic field. The procedure involves turning the ship through a series of known headings and recording the compass readings to create a deviation card. Regulations, such as those under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention, mandate that this calibration be performed periodically and after any structural modifications that could affect the ship's magnetism.
