North pole

The end of a magnet or electromagnet from which magnetic field lines are conventionally considered to emerge. When a compass is placed in a magnetic field, its north-seeking pole points towards the magnetic north pole. In the Earth's magnetic field, the geographic North Pole is near the magnetic south pole, causing compasses to point north.
