A method of rapidly recharging an electric vehicle battery by supplying direct current from an external charger, bypassing the car's onboard AC-to-DC converter. The charging station performs the conversion, and the vehicle's battery management system tells it how much current the pack can accept. Public DC fast chargers commonly deliver 50 kW to 350 kW, against at most about 19 kW from Level 2 AC equipment.
