Dead section
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001592
A short segment of electrified railway track or overhead line that is intentionally not supplied with electrical power, typically found at junctions or crossovers. These sections prevent short circuits or arcing when pantographs or collector shoes transition between different power supply zones or phases. Trains must coast through dead sections, relying on momentum to maintain movement.
