Dead stand

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001593

An area of forest where the majority of trees have died due to factors such as insect infestation, disease, drought, or fire, but remain standing. This accumulation of dry, dead wood creates an extremely high risk of intense wildfire and poses safety hazards for logging operations. Salvage logging is often conducted in dead stands to recover economic value from the timber and reduce fuel loads before the wood decays or burns.
