Edge rail

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001966

An early form of railway track where the wheels of the rolling stock ran on the top edge of a raised rail, rather than within a flanged plateway. This design allowed for the development of flanged wheels, which provided better guidance and reduced friction. Edge rails became the standard for modern railways.
