Episcopic

Describing a method of illumination where light is directed onto the surface of an opaque object and then reflected into an optical system for viewing or imaging. This technique is commonly employed in microscopes designed for examining non-transparent samples. It contrasts with diascopic illumination, which passes light through a transparent object.
