Fur

To apply thin strips of wood or metal, called furring strips, to a wall, ceiling, or floor to create a level and plumb surface for finishing materials. This process creates an air space behind the final surface, which can be used for insulation, moisture control, or running utilities. Furring strips are attached directly to the substrate, such as a masonry wall or uneven joists, before drywall, paneling, or siding is installed.
