Granny

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002629

A type of knot, specifically an insecure binding knot made by incorrectly tying a square knot (reef knot). It consists of two overhand knots, one on top of the other, but with the second tied in the same direction as the first, causing the ends to emerge diagonally. Under tension, a granny knot can slip or jam, making it unreliable for securing loads or joining ropes in agricultural and industrial settings.
