Knot

A unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour, used to measure the velocity of a vessel through water or the speed of wind and water currents. The term originates from the historical practice of using a chip log, where sailors counted the number of knots on a line that passed through their hands in a set time. One knot is equivalent to approximately 1.15 statute miles per hour or exactly 1.852 kilometers per hour.
