Handblown

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002715

Describing a traditional glassmaking technique where a skilled artisan shapes molten glass by inflating it with air through a long, hollow tube called a blowpipe. The glassblower gathers a gob of glass from a furnace, then rolls, swings, and blows into it to create the desired form before it cools. Finished pieces are placed in an annealing oven to cool slowly, and they can be identified by a pontil mark on the base where the object was attached to a rod.
