Higher-speed rail

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002835

A category of passenger rail service that runs faster than conventional trains but below true high-speed rail, using upgraded existing track and signaling instead of new dedicated lines. Top speeds run from about 80 to 125 mph (130 to 200 km/h). It contrasts with high-speed rail, which usually means purpose-built lines carrying trains at 155 mph (250 km/h) or more.
