The main railway line between terminals, distinct from yards, sidings, or branch lines where trains are assembled or stored. Locomotives and crews assigned to service on this part of the network are designated as being in road service, operating at higher speeds over long distances. A road engine is a locomotive designed or designated for hauling trains on the main line.
