A mechanically driven high-pressure pump that supplies fuel to the injectors in a gasoline direct injection (GDI) or common-rail diesel engine. It receives low-pressure fuel from the in-tank electric pump and intensifies its pressure significantly to enable precise, atomized injection directly into the combustion chamber. Gasoline direct injection systems operate at pressures from 500 to over 5,000 psi, while diesel common-rail systems exceed 30,000 psi.
