A short wooden stake, commonly a two-by-two inch, driven flush with the ground, with a tack or nail set in its top to mark a survey point exactly. A taller witness stake placed beside it carries the point's identification. Hubs are temporary markers for construction layout, in contrast with a monument, which is a permanent marker.
