Hush
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002934
A historical mining technique that uses a sudden, powerful torrent of water to scour away surface soil and loose rock, exposing underlying mineral veins. Miners would create a reservoir by damming a stream at a high elevation and then release the water to strip the hillside. This form of hydraulic mining created deep, linear gullies, or hushes, which are still visible in old mining landscapes like the Pennines of Northern England.
