An abbreviation for incremental, referring to a system of measurement or movement where each new position is specified relative to the previous one. In machining and automation, an incremental positioning system on a CNC machine moves the tool a specified distance from its current location, rather than from a fixed zero point. This contrasts with an absolute system, where all coordinates are referenced to a single, unchanging origin.
