Touch off

To establish a zero reference point for a machine tool by carefully bringing the cutting tool into light contact with a workpiece surface or a tool setter. This action calibrates the machine's coordinate system, setting the origin for one or more axes (X, Y, or Z) from which all subsequent movements are measured. The process is confirmed visually, audibly, or with an electronic probe.
