INS
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003027
An abbreviation for Inertial Navigation System, a self-contained navigation device that uses motion sensors (accelerometers) and rotation sensors (gyroscopes) to track a vessel's position, orientation, and velocity. The system continuously calculates its current location by integrating data from its initial position without needing external references. Modern marine INS units are often integrated with GPS to correct for the small cumulative errors, or drift, inherent in inertial measurement.
