An Inertial Navigation System, a self-contained unit of accelerometers and gyroscopes that tracks position, attitude and velocity by dead reckoning without external references. On research aircraft it supplies the ground velocity and orientation needed to derive wind from measured airspeed. Its errors grow with time as small sensor biases accumulate, a drift that is usually bounded by periodic GPS updates.
