Jam
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003104
To secure a rope or line by wedging it into a cleat or fairlead so that it binds under its own tension, preventing it from slipping. This action provides a quick method of fastening that holds firmly but can be released rapidly. A jam cleat is a specific fitting with two converging jaws that grip the line, distinct from a horn cleat which requires figure-eight turns.
