Phantom jam
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004261
A traffic congestion event that occurs without any apparent cause, such as an accident, road construction, or lane closure. These jams often arise from a ripple effect caused by a single driver braking unexpectedly, leading subsequent drivers to brake harder, propagating a wave of slowdowns. Research into traffic flow dynamics aims to understand and mitigate phantom jams.
